Dog Bed for Puppies: Which Size and Model?
In short: Choose the size based on the expected weight of the fully grown dog, or deliberately buy a smaller bed first and a large one later. For the first few months, a completely washable bed with a high rim is ideal: The rim provides security, and accidents simply end up in the washing machine.
Buy one size or grow with your dog?
There are two ways, and both are fine:
- A bed for later: You choose the size for the fully grown dog. This saves a second purchase. Some puppies may feel a little lost in a very large bed at first. A rolled-up blanket at the edge helps.
- Two beds: A smaller bed for the first few months, then a large one. The smaller bed often becomes a second bed in the car, at the office, or at Grandma's.
Which size for which puppy?
Use the expected weight of the fully grown dog as a guide:
| Adult dog | Size | Inner sleeping area | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| up to 4 kg | XS | 40 x 30 cm | Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese |
| 4 to 8 kg | S | 50 x 40 cm | Shih Tzu, Jack Russell Terrier, Pug |
| 8 to 15 kg | M | 60 x 50 cm | Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Basenji |
| 15 to 25 kg | L | 70 x 60 cm | Border Collie, English Bulldog |
| 25 to 35 kg | XL | 80 x 65 cm | Golden Retriever, Labrador, German Shepherd |
| 35 to 50 kg | XXL | 90 x 75 cm | Rottweiler, Newfoundland |
| from 50 kg | 3XL | 110 x 90 cm | Mastiff, Saint Bernard, Dogue de Bordeaux |
An example from our size chart: A Golden Retriever fits well in an L as a puppy and usually needs an XL when fully grown.
Washable is a must
In the first few weeks, accidents are bound to happen. A bed that can go completely in the machine saves you a lot of work. Soft Stripe, Dream, Meallow and Candy can be washed completely at 30 degrees without spinning. For Lucky, remove the covers with zippers. This is how it's done properly: Washing a dog bed.
Rim for security
Puppies sleep a lot and like to snuggle up against something, just like they used to with their siblings. A high, soft rim like on Dream or Candy gives them this feeling. The round Meallow is ideal for puppies that like to curl up tightly.
Chewing and gnawing
Almost every puppy tests its bed with its teeth. No fabric dog bed is bite-proof. Give your puppy plenty of chew toys, do not leave it alone with the bed for long during the teething period, and praise it when it lies quietly in it.
The right place
Place the bed in a quiet spot where your puppy can still see or hear you. Avoid drafts and being in the direct vicinity of the heater. Read more tips about placement in the post The dog bed in the living room.
